Revelation blog post 18: Holy Holy Holy

February 17, 2015

Revelation 4: 6-8

John continues to try to describe the scene in front of him and still struggles to find the words which can help us.

In the next part he takes us to 4 living creatures who surround the throne.

Here we’re in with a chance.

They look like a lion, an ox, a man, an eagle. At last things we can easily visualise.

Oh hang on a minute. There’s more detail.

Each creature has eyes all over them, and have got 6 wings. John is even kind enough to give us the detail that they have eyes under their wings!

What on earth are we looking at. What man, for example, looks anything like that?

Still, they are living creatures we know that. John is trying his best descriptive powers.

They also have something to say. And they say it all the time. Day and night.

“Holy holy holy, is the Lord God Almighty”.

3 times holy for a God in 3 holy persons.

These living creatures bow to the holiness of God. Perhaps they are representatives of all living creatures. God is the God of all creation.

The God who was and is and is to come.

God is holy. Above all our imagining.

God is eternal. Always has been always will be.

Who God is gets a reaction from these mysterious creatures. What response does it get from you and me?

Day and night…
