Hidden truth 6:Keep it dark by Genesis

October 2, 2014

Here’s another in an occasional series of songs that I listen to where I find the lyrics have spiritual context – irrespective of what was intended by the performers. This one only occurred to me today as I listened to Abacab commenting to be from work.

Jesus encouraged his disciples to be bright lights in the world, following his example. As he said “no one hides a light under a bucket. Let your light shine before men.

The man in ‘Keep it dark’ has a story to tell of a fantastic world he has experienced but the powers that be order him to tell a different story about a kidnapping.

But why he has seen is a world of hope, of beauty, of peace, of joy, of meaning.

As Christians we have experienced another world, experienced the transformation that Jesus brings to lives of people living in his light. No we are called to shine, to share our story. But the world encourages us to keep it dark. They don’t want to know. Faith is a personnel thing keep it to yourself.

But the challenge is to speak out.

When Jesus disciples were arrested they were told to stop talking about Jesus. Keep it dark.

But their response was plain.

But Peter and John replied, ‘Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.’ (‭Acts‬ ‭4‬:‭19-20‬ NIVUK)

KEEP IT DARK
Found that man reported missing,
He wandered in his home.
It don’t seem to bad if you consider
Just what he’s been through.

Seems he met up with a gang of thieves,
Who mistook him for a man of means,
They locked him up then found he had no money,
So they let him go again.
Now he’s back at home and happy
Just to see the kids.

I wish that I could really tell you
All the things that happened to me
And all that I have seen.
A world full of people their hearts full of joy,
Cities of light with no fear of war,
And thousands of creatures with happier lives,
And dreams of a future with meaning and no need to hide.

Oh, keep it dark.

It seems strange to have to lie,
About a world so bright.
And tell instead a made-up story,
From the world of night.

I wish, that I could really tell you,
All the things that happened to me
And all that I have seen,
A world full of people their hearts full of joy,
Cities of light with no fear of war,
And thousands of creatures with happier lives,
And dreams of a future with meaning and no need to lie,
No need to hate,
No need to hide.

Oh, keep it dark.
