Revelation blog post 11: Jezebel

July 17, 2014

Revelation 2:18-29

Fourth on the list is Thyatira. Waiting nervously.

“These are the words of the Son of God. Eyes like blazing fire. Feet like burnished bronze”.

It’s that big vision again. The Son of God in all his glory. All seeing. All consuming. Walking with them.

Again “I know”.

Sometimes it can be comforting to know that Jesus knows. Other times it can be very very threatening. There is no hiding.

And yet Jesus knows good things about Thyatira. Deeds, love, faith, service, perseverance. And they are busier than ever. It’s another good report.

But we know now to expect a but. A nevertheless.

” Jezebel. You tolerate that so called prophet”. Again idolatry and immorality are the things that tolerance lead to. These are recurring themes among these letters. Whatever the good qualities these 2 things are a threat and in some cases have been allowed a foothold.

Who is Jezebel? We don’t know. Jezebel in the Old Testament was a nasty piece of work. Maybe for that reason Jesus adopts the name for this woman.

It reads as if she was a real woman for she was being given an opportunity to repent. But she would not. And now she and those taken in by her would suffer the consequences.

People would see. Eyes like blazing fire. Yes eyes that can see the hearts and minds. That can see the real you and me. Jesus too is the judge who will bring punishment where there is no repentance.

For the rest, They have not been taken in and that is enough. Maybe they have not been strong enough but it seem the main thing is that the source of the problem will be removed. They will continue in their good witness.

Again there is a prize for the victorious. They will be given authority over the nations. And theirs will be a light that is eternal.

Open your ears again. God’s Spirit is talking.
