Revelation blog post 7: Shine!

June 15, 2014

“Shiny happy people laughing

Meet me in the crowd, people, people
Throw your love around, love me, love me
Take it into town, happy, happy
Put it in the ground where the flowers grow
Gold and silver shine

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

Everyone around, love them, love them
Put it in your hands, take it, take it
There’s no time to cry, happy, happy
Put it in your heart where tomorrow shines
Gold and silver shine

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

Whoa, here we go

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

Shiny happy people holding hands
People, happy people
People” REM – Shiny happy people (from the album ‘Out of time’)

Revelation 1:17 – 20

Face to face with the first and last, John is encouraged not to fear. I mean what else would you do?

There is no doubt that the Jesus John now meets, a million miles from the one he had seen at close quarters, is the one who more than anyone should command awe and fear. He is the first and last. The beginning and end of everything. He cannot be contained. He cannot be explained.

And uniquely he who was the one who was dead. And now he’s alive. Forever and ever. There from the beginning. There for eternity. Conqueror of death. Such power.

Such authority. Holding the keys of heaven and hades. Heaven and hell. The eternal destiny of everyone is in his hands. Reason to fear. Reason to fear.

But he says to John “Don’t fear”.

John is instructed to write down what he has seen and heard and what will follow.

Firstly glorified Jesus offers a couple of words of explanation.

The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches that John is to write to. A sign that God’s protection is there for those seven congregations.

The seven lamp stands that Jesus walks amongst are the churches themselves.

If it’s true for the 7 churches is it not true for yours?

God’s protection is over you. Jesus walks amongst the many congregations of his church. And your church is a lamp stand. Yes you are a light. Your church is to shine like a beacon in the world. You are to be seen. Like that light on a hill Jesus once spoke of . Not to be hidden under a bucket.

Can the cities and towns we live in see the brilliant light of Jesus is our churches? Are they drawn to that light?

For we need not fear, for Jesus, eternal, all conquering, walks where we are by his Spirit.
