John’s gospel post 80: Justice?

April 18, 2014

John 19: 1 – 16

Now here’s justice.

Pilate can find no charge. Although he therefore needs no other reason to release him he gives the Jews another opportunity to reject him.

There is no cause for punishment but Pilate has the innocent man flogged.

The soldiers twist a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They robe him. They mock worship him.

This is gratuitous behaviour as Pilate still regards Jesus as innocent!

After this interlude he tries again to persuade the Jews. ” there’s no charge here!”

Jesus is produced to the crowd. Humiliated by the soldiers. Now in the sight of the Jews. Here he is.

It’s a red rag to a bull.

“Crucify”.

“Do it yourself!” says the governor.

But this man is guilty of death by Jewish law. He is guilty of the ultimate blasphemy, claiming to be the Son of God.

None of which is going to interest Pilate. But the Son of God bit seems to freak him out. What is he dealing with here?

Pilate questions Jesus but again gets no reply until he steps over the line.

“I have the power to execute you or release you”.

“You don’t have any power over me. God is in control here not you”.

Pilate thinks Jesus is innocent. He is also finding all this talk of God unsettling. He has to find a way to get him off.

He tries again with the Jews. They play another card.

“Caesar is king. He doesn’t like other people setting themselves up as kings!”

“If this man is your king, you can have him”.

“Crucify him!”

With forked tongues they cry “Caesar is the only king we want!”

Hypocrites!

With nothing still to pin on Jesus, Pilate caves in. Jesus will be crucified. All justice has left the building.

But here’s the thing. These people all think they are in control.

But God is in charge. All power is given by him. For his purposes.

The Jewish leaders get their way.

But so does God.
