John’s gospel post 79: What is truth?

April 18, 2014

“All I got is a red guitar, 3 chords and the truth” Bob Dylan – All along the watchtower (from the album ‘John Wesley Harding’)

John 18: 25 – 40

John takes us back to Peter as he waits nearby. Twice more he is challenged as a Jesus follower. Twice he strongly denies any connection. A cock crows as a reminder of Jesus’ prediction. All Peter’s confidence crumbled.

The Jewish leaders now take Jesus to Pilate, the roman governor. Although this is the darkest of times as they hand the saviour of the world over, these leaders are still religious. They will not enter into Pilate’s place on the Sabbath.

Religion. Religion is mentioned in the Bible. True religion is to care for widows and orphans etc.

Religion. It can be a front. It can be a bad excuse for anything. A front for greed, immorality, discrimination.

It is a poor excuse for turning God’s chosen Messiah over to the enemy.

Pilate asks for details of the charges.

They insist he is a criminal. Not much to go on. But only Pilate has authority to execute.

So Pontus Pilate is confronted with Jesus. This man has been described as the King of the Jews.

“Are you the King of the Jews?”

“Is that your own idea or just what you’ve heard?”

Pilate is baffled by all this Jewish stuff. Their religion. This man. “What do I know? Someone tell me what this is about”.

“If I was king of this world my subjects would be fighting to rescue me but I am head of another kingdom”.

“So you are a king then!”

“You said it. Those who believe in truth will listen to me”.

Pilate asks a question “what is truth?” But he doesn’t want an answer. The words hang in the air as he goes outside to the Jews. Whatever Pilate made of Jesus (mad perhaps?) there was nothing here to form the basis of a charge.

So there the story must end. If natural justice has any place here. Innocence = freedom. Unconditionally Pilate must let Jesus go, but instead he asks the Jews. “We always release a prisoner each year, let’s let Jesus go”.

The Jews protest and demand that Jesus not be released, overlooking the breach of natural justice in their determination to be rid of him.

They cry for Pilate to release Barabbas a criminal, a troublemaker. The deal is done.

So what is the truth? Or don’t you care either?
