John’s gospel post 62: Reserved!

January 24, 2014

John 14:1 – 3

Jesus now starts on a more encouraging note.

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled”.

Because he is about to leave them?

Because one of them was going to betray him?

Because Peter was going to deny him?

The disciples had plenty of reasons to be worried.

We have plenty of things that stress and worry us. And these things effect us emotionally and physically. I am often told that symptoms I suffer from are down to anxiety and stress (and that worries me!).

We worry about our work. We are anxious about our families. We stress about our finances. We are concerned about our health.

And we worry about our relationship with Jesus. Does he seem near or far off? Has he finally given up on me? Why do I find it so hard to live out my faith right?

But Jesus offers comfort to his disciples then and now.

“In my father’s house there are many rooms. It’s huge! Imagine the biggest high rise hotel in the world – it’s tiny. I’m going away to get a room ready for you. There’s not just a number on the door. Your name is on it. And I’m going to come back to take you there”.

Whatever life throws at us, and it certainly will throw plenty, Jesus offers us security. The Bible uses the word hope, a word that speaks of certainty (not using the word in the wishy-washy way we do). And that hope is what can keep us going. It enables us to persevere. Secure in Jesus’ hands.
