John’s gospel post 49:Darkness

January 4, 2014

“I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day”. Johnny Nash – I can see clearly now ( from the album ‘Harder they come’)

John 9:35 – 41

To finish this particular episode then.

A puzzled man is humming Amazing Grace – ‘ was blind but now I see’. “Created a lot of fuss though. What’s it about?”

Meanwhile Jesus hears the man has been thrown out. He finds him and asks him “do you believe in the Son of Man?”

” In who sorry?!”

“Me – you have met the Son of Man”.

Oh yes the man believes. How could he not after the day he’d had? And he bows and worships hIs healer.

Jesus says he has come to give sight to the blind. Isaiah had predicted one who would do just that.

But Jesus goes on to say that those who can see will be made blind.

The grumblers are at hand. The Pharisees. ” you calling us blind are you?”

“No you’re not blind. You see everything clearly, so you say, and that’s what makes you worst of all”.

So we have a blind man who meets Jesus, can see and worships him.

We have people who can see but will lose their sight. Scary to think about that. People who know it all. All the rights and wrongs. Rules and regs. The religious people.

In utter darkness.

Lord open our eyes!
