Hidden Truth 4: In your eyes by Peter Gabriel

Another in an occasional series on songs that speak to me spiritually.

This slice of tasty world music comes from Peter Gabriel’s hit album “So”. The live version takes it to a higher level and gives it the full African treatment.

This is a song which speaks to me of a relationship with Jesus. So many of the thoughts contained within the lyrics echo a life of following him.

To me the song is sung to him.

We all know what it is to feel lost , to feel an emptiness. Sometimes we feel the need to drive off – to get away from God’s voice. Maybe like Jonah we don’t want to hear what God is saying to us through Jesus. Maybe we’re just confused by what it means to follow Jesus. Perhaps we wander down a path that we instinctively know is wrong. But the song reminds us that it is impossible to run away from God. Wherever we go, Jesus is there by his Spirit. As the writer of the psalm said, “Where can I go from your presence” – in the heights or the depths he is there.

when we recognise that fact and stop running, we drop the facade, lay aside our pride and reach out to Jesus.

As we look to Jesus – in his eyes, we see a light and a warmth that we can find nowhere else – in no one else. We find completeness which can be found in no one else. We find ourselves in a place of worship. We can search everywhere for the truth – until we find it in Jesus.

In our lives we find pain (even sometimes in our relationship with Jesus), we feel time slip by. We often feel that it is hard work – a struggle to keep our relationship right. But there is discipline and time spent in his presence keeps us awake and fully alive. That is when we truly feed.

What completeness.

Love I get so lost, sometimes
days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
when I want to run away
I drive off in my car
but whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are

all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
the heat I see in your eyes

love, I don’t like to see so much pain
so much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

and all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light,
the heat I see in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
