John’s Gospel post 3: Word Alive!

August 2, 2013

“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” – John 1:3

So The Word John is writing about speaks God’s words. In fact he is God. So we can learn about God by listening to the Word.

But the Word goes further then that. This word is creative. It creates everything. He was there at the beginning of time and he wasn’t idle – he was at work. If we go back to that beginning as it is told in Genesis – the first book of the Bible, we find that “in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth”. And John takes us right back to that point – the moment of creation.

The Genesis account reads as if to say God spoke and it happened. I don’t know to what extent God worked and struggled and sweated as he created the magnificence of this world. “Let there be light!” And there was. Was it literally God’s voice, The Word, that brought everything into being? Just with a command. What power. God is there, Genesis tells us that God’s Spirit is there. John tells us the Word was there. So when God says let US make man, we have a small but massive team at work in creation.

John tells us the Word was there and the Word made it all. He is the architect. He is the builder. If the Word speaks, then we listen to somebody with authority and power, not just wise words.

And whether we acknowledge it or not mankind is his creation. We can deny it if we like, but that doesn’t change the fact. There is nothing or nobody that the Word did not make. So he has authority as the voice of God, and authority for we have the maker’s name on us.
