John’s Gospel post 2: God Word

July 30, 2013

“I said please talk to me
If you’d just talk to me
Unblock this misery
If you’d only talk to me” – Peter Gabriel – Come talk to me (from the album “Us”)

John 1:1 & 2

So God communicates with the world through the Word.

The Word was qualified to speak for God, because John tells us he was there in the beginning WITH God. God and and the Word together right from the start. So when the Word speaks he can be trusted.

But before we run away with the idea that the Word sat in the presence of God, soaking up like a student genius, John has an ever more mind blowing claim to make to his readers. The Word WAS God.

John doesn’t ease us in gently to this and leave us to draw our own conclusions. He nails it from verse 1. The one I am talking about – who comes as God’s Word – IS God.

In an amazing statement John tells his readers that God himself has spoken. We can hear from God. Are you ready to listen?

Verse 2 summarises – he was with God in the beginning.

Is this God distant? Is he aloof? Does he have nothing to say to us that could be relevant? Well I think John is of a view that if God has spoken, we need to listen.

Before you go, can we just have a Word?
