A boy!

July 23, 2013

“I heard the news today – O boy!” – A Day in the Life – The Beatles (from the album “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”)

“For to us a child is born. To us a son is given. And the government shall be upon his shoulders” Isaiah 9:6

Well yesterday it happened. The announcement of a birth. And today millions sat – eyes glued to 2 hospital doors waiting for a first sight of the royal baby – the as yet unnamed prince.

But even last weekend many of our national papers published their royal baby supplements, even though supposedly the expected date of delivery was not public knowledge. Even the Radio Times went royal baby themed on the cover.

So I was woken by the radio at 6.30 this morning, to the news of the world – literally. A montage of clips from around the world – US, Australia and goodness knows where else. Number one news headline was the same for everyone around the world it seemed.

And in my state of half awakedness I imagined myself in a parallel universe – in a different place and time. Where the news readers all read with delight one headline – “To us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders”. Those old words an accurate paraphrase of what I was hearing.

A child born to be king. I must admit that was an eerie thought. If this boy ever becomes King in my lifetime, something will have gone badly wrong – or I will be unusually old!

Maybe I’m strange but I couldn’t help making the contrast with that other child born to be king. It was a night like any other when Jesus was born. His birth had been predicted long before but largely forgotten. Born in the most humble of circumstances, out of sight of the world’s media. This was not the news of the day in Bethlehem, let alone Judah. Certainly not around the world.

True there were choirs of angels singing to the shepherds in the fields – something a bit different. But largely unnoticed.

A child born not just to be king – The king of kings.

Unnoticed. And largely unnoticed today…..
