“If you God kept records on wrongdoings, who would stand a chance? As it turns out, forgiveness is your habit, and that’s why you’re worshiped”. Psalm 130: 3& 4 MSG

Of course God has a big book. And he waits to trip us up and catch us out. Then he smiles as he puts another entry in the ledger. It’s stacking up. This is God the schoolmaster. He enjoys nothing better than to see you get it wrong.

But hang on a minute – that’s not what the writer of Psalm 130 has to say. God does NOT keep a record of wrongs. That is not what is in his book. I mean if it was, then we’d all have pages written about us. A full biography.

No – there is a single line entry against us – FORGIVEN. That is what God wants for us. That is his mission. That is why Jesus came – so we could be forgiven.

When the book of Revelation talks about opening the books, it is not primarily to find a list of evil people and their wrongdoings, but to find a list of the forgiven. To welcome them home. And we can know that forgiveness, As the writer says, that is why we worship him.
